Damaging Downburst Prediction and Detection Algorithm (DDPDA)
Detection
The algorithm requires that the following conditions be met at the
lowest tilt and within 1 km of the ground for a "detection" to be issued:
-
Moderate downburst:
-
18 m/s one-way wind, or
-
25 m/s radial velocity difference along a radial
-
Severe downburst:
-
25 m/s one-way wind, or
-
40 m/s radial velocity difference along a radial
All of these numbers, including the maximum tilt and height, are site adaptable.
Detections are presently cell-based, and the detection icon is not centered
on the maximum divergence.
[Need to scan the whole lowest tilt to find the
centers of divergent couplets in such a way that the detection icon will
be centered]
